When delving into the realm of being a medium and exploring spiritual communication, I've come to notice through the many years of mentoring other mediums that there is often a common thread that emerges - many mediums grapple with imposter syndrome. They tend to question the validity of what they are sensing, they feel like frauds, making up stories and the very impressions they receive. It is an inner conflict that not only hinders their ability to connect with the spiritual realm but it is also what blocks the flow of genuine communication with the spirit world.
So why do medium's experience imposter syndrome?
Honestly, this stems from a deeply-rooted limiting beliefs, self-doubt and insecurity, a distrust in themselves, their abilities, and the spirit world; a pervasive feeling of doubt and inadequacy despite the evidence . How do I know? Because I used to feel this way too.
The nature of spiritual communication involves receiving messages and impressions from the unseen world that are intangible and subjective. This ambiguity can trigger doubts in mediums about the validity and accuracy of the information they receive.
Its a story of not good enoughness wrapped up in fear, comparison, and self-criticism:
Fear. It's common for mediums to wrestle with feelings of inadequacy and the fear of not measuring up to others in their field, fear of being wrong. There's a fear of being exposed as a "fraud," apprehensive that others will unveil their perceived lack of competence and more.
Comparison. The comparison trap only serves to intensify their inner conflicts, as they question whether they are truly capable of accurately interpreting the messages from the unseen world. Mediums can sometimes compare themselves to others in the field, diminishing their own self-worth and expertise. This not only hampers their confidence but also clouds their connection to the spiritual realm, hindering their ability to fully trust in the messages they receive and share.
Self-criticism: Many mediums attribute their success in spiritual communication to luck rather than their keen skills and ability which only further fuel feelings of inadequacy and impostorship. This undermines their own capabilities and downplays the unique and beautiful way spirit works with them. It makes it a delicate balance between faith in their abilities and the the lingering uncertainties that impostor syndrome can instill in them.
The big question is, how do you conquer impostor syndrome, squash that negative self-talk, and break free from those self-limiting beliefs?
Here are some tips to help boost your confidence and overcome feelings of imposter syndrome:
- Intention. Intention is everything. As I share in my mentoring groups, 'Where there is intention, there is spirit'. Create a specific intention for every reading you do. Let spirit know how they can help you. Get clear on what you would like to achieve in the connection, and allow your intention to guide the flow of energy and messages during the reading. By setting a specific intention for each reading, you create a focused and purposeful space for spirit to work through you, enhancing the clarity and depth of the connection.
- Keep a Spirit Journal. Record your wins! For every reading that you do that was impactful, successful, and accurate, take a moment to jot down the details. By documenting your victories and memorable experiences in the spiritual realm, you can reflect upon your successes and boost your confidence when feeling uncertain.
- Seek Mentorship. Having a mentor or support system can provide reassurance and perspective when you're facing self-doubt or impostor feelings, reminding you of your capabilities and unique gifts. Reach out to fellow mediums who can offer guidance, validation, and encouragement. It takes community to raise us up when we are feeling down.
- Declare it and claim it. Positive affirmations can serve as a powerful tool to cultivate self-belief and reinforce your spiritual abilities. When self-doubt surfaces, consider crafting mantras tailored to your mediumship practice, such as, "I am a clear channel for spirit. I trust in the messages I receive. I am a vessel of light."
- Believe that you are good enough, and trust that spirit will take care of the rest. When faced with negative self-talk or self-limiting beliefs that cast doubt on your abilities or achievements, don't brush them aside. Take the opportunity to delve deeper and challenge these thoughts. Ask yourself: Is this belief rooted in truth? What positive and accurate story can I create to replace this self-limiting narrative?
By overcoming your imposter syndrome, you will not only boost your confidence but also pave the way for you to thrive and embrace your full mediumistic potential.
